English Tense Practice Exercise for Intermediate Learners

Objective:

To help learners understand and practice using English tenses in conversation, focusing on present simple, past simple, and future simple tenses.

Warm-up: Quick Review

Provide the student with a brief explanation of each tense:

  • Present Simple: Used for routines, facts, or general truths.
    (e.g., I eat breakfast at 8 a.m.)
  • Past Simple: Used for completed actions in the past.
    (e.g., I watched a movie yesterday.)
  • Future Simple: Used to talk about actions that will happen in the future.
    (e.g., I will visit my friend tomorrow.)

Part 1: Identify the Tense

Read the sentences below and identify the tense:

  1. I go to school every day.
  2. She visited her grandparents last week.
  3. They will travel to Paris next month.

 

Part 2: Fill in the Blanks

Choose the correct form of the verb in parentheses to complete each sentence:

  1. She ______ (walk) to work every morning. (Present Simple)
  2. Last summer, we ______ (go) to the beach. (Past Simple)
  3. I ______ (call) you later. (Future Simple)

Part 3: Match the Question to the Answer

Match the questions to the appropriate answers to practice context:

  1. What do you do on weekends?
  2. Where did you go last holiday?
  3. What will you do after class?

    a. I went to Italy with my family.
    b. I usually relax and read a book.
    c. I will meet my friends for coffee.

 

Part 4: Conversation Practice

Scenario: Daily Life

Work in pairs or groups to practice using all three tenses in conversation. Use the prompts below:

  1. Ask about routines (Present Simple):
    • What do you usually do in the morning?
    • How often do you go to the gym?
  2. Discuss past events (Past Simple):
    • What did you do last weekend?
    • Where did you travel last year?
  3. Plan for the future (Future Simple):
    • What will you do tomorrow?
    • Will you visit your family this weekend?

Part 5: Role-Playing Activity

Situation: Planning a Trip

Take turns acting as two friends planning a vacation. Use all three tenses in your discussion:

  • Discuss daily habits related to travel
  • Share past experiences about trips
  • Talk about future plans for the trip

Homework

Write a short paragraph (5–7 sentences) about a typical day, a memorable past experience, and a future plan. Use one example of each tense.

This exercise combines explanation, practice, and real-life application to help learners confidently use English tenses in conversation.
