Exercise: Advanced English Phrases

1. Break the Ice

  • Meaning: To do or say something to relax and make people feel more comfortable, especially in a formal or awkward situation.
  • Example: “Before the meeting started, the host told a joke to break the ice and ease the tension.”

2. Hit the Nail on the Head

  • Meaning: To describe something accurately or precisely.
  • Example: “When you said that the project was delayed due to lack of resources, you hit the nail on the head.”

3. Under the Weather

  • Meaning: To feel unwell or sick.
  • Example: “I won’t be able to attend the meeting today; I’m feeling under the weather.”

4. Cut to the Chase

  • Meaning: To get to the point or the most important part of a conversation without wasting time.
  • Example: “Can you cut to the chase and tell me what you really want to discuss?”

5. Out of the Blue

  • Meaning: Something that happens unexpectedly or surprisingly.
  • Example: “I received an offer for my dream job out of the blue, and I was completely surprised.”

6. Speak of the Devil

  • Meaning: To mention someone just before they appear or are heard from.
  • Example: “I was just talking about John, and speak of the devil, here he is.” 

7. Beat Around the Bush

  • Meaning: To avoid talking directly or plainly about something.
  • Example: “Stop beating around the bush and tell me what you really think.”

8. To Go the Extra Mile

  • Meaning: To do more than what is expected or required.
  • Example: “The customer service team went the extra mile to resolve my issue and even offered a discount.”

9. Every Now and Then

  • Meaning: Occasionally or from time to time.
  • Example: “I like to try new restaurants every now and then to mix things up.”

10. In the Nick of Time

  • Meaning: Just in time, before it is too late.
  • Example: “The ambulance arrived in the nick of time and saved the patient’s life.”

Practice Exercise:

  1. Fill in the Blanks:

    • “Before the party, we told jokes to ___________ and make everyone feel more comfortable.”
    • Answer: break the ice
    • “When you said that the project was delayed, you ___________ and described the situation perfectly.”
    • Answer: hit the nail on the head
  2. Use the Phrases in Sentences:

    • Write your own sentences using each of the phrases above.
  3. Role-Play:

    • Practice using these phrases in a conversation with a partner. For example, if you are discussing a project delay, you might say, “When you said that the project was delayed due to lack of resources, you hit the nail on the head.”
  4. Listening and Speaking:

    • Listen to a native speaker using these phrases in a conversation or video. Repeat the phrases to practice your pronunciation.
